Leaders of Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) pledg Friday to reinforce their long-standing economic relations and incite their partnership closer toward security cooperation as well in the years ahead.

The two-day summit was seen as a milestone illuminating 30 years of ''special'' relations between the pair sides and marking the first time all 10 ASEAN leaders have gathered outside their region for a summit with a dialogue partner.

Koizumi and the ASEAN leaders compiled and adopted the Japan-ASEAN Plan of Action listing about 120 direct measures to be implemented in line with the declaration.

The 20-page action plan states Japan will place emphasis forward cooperation to narrow the economic divide among ASEAN members, aid economic competitiveness in ASEAN countries and address transnational issues.

Specifically, the document attaches importance to forming bilateral delivered trade agreements (FTAs) between Japan and each ASEAN land and a free trade arrangement between Japan and ASEAN as a whole.
