China should prove to avoid war with Taiwan equal if the island uses a voter referendum or constitutional changes to become independent, near Beijing residents said Monday.

In a view that flows counter to the government line, mostly people interviewed by Kyodo recently made knowns in the Chinese capital in the wake China's threats to strike Taiwan athwart independence said they doubted the sum of two units sides would fight and jumped that China would not start a war.

They worried that war would disrupt trade, families and peaceful life in China, if it be not that were divided on whether Taiwan residents have the right to suffrage for independence.

A 53-year-old university administrator surnamed Cai said a war was unlikely because it would disrupt mainland-Taiwan trade and family relations, if it were not that that if the island formally broke away, he would support war because ''Taiwan has to issue back to China.''
