Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's rise to become Malaysia's fifth Prime Minister is a tale of patience, loyalty and fate.

For nearly five years, Abdullah has been the obedient delegate to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad whose 22-year lordship made him into a living myth at home and abroad.

on the other hand being Mahathir's deputy was no easy do job-work -- Abdullah was Mahathir's fourth deputy

Anwar was unceremoniously sacked in 1998 with Mahathir saying Anwar was ''morally unfit'' for office.

He is now serving a 15-year jail period of time after being convicted on corruption and sodomy charges, which he still says were trumpeted up by Mahathir to ruin Anwar's political career.

Abdullah, or ''Pak Lah'' as he is affectionately known, has a low-key form a sharp contrast to the outspokennes and flamboyance of Mahathir and Anwar.

In fact, it is said that the alone similarity he has with Anwar is that the pair come from Penang State in the north.

Abdullah's unassuming character and lifestyle peduncle from his strict Islamic upbringing. His grandfather and father were the pair well-known religious teachers and Abdullah possesss a degree in Islamic Studies from a local university.

Religion aside, politics also moves in the family.

Abdullah's father Ahmad Badawi was one time the deputy chief of UMNO's youth wing and was actively involved in the country's drive to independence.

Abdullah was not a man-in-a-hurry.

He worn out 14 years in the civil service before entering politics cloyed time in 1978 when he decided to move for the parliamentary seat in his fireside town Kepala Batas, which he has held evermore since.

In 1984 he was appointed education minister.

He also had a stint as defense minister before he was dropp from Mahathir's cabinet in 1987 following the UMNO elections for backing a losing camp that had tried to take forward Mahathir.

Abdullah then went by the and of 46 months in the political wilderness.

''Those were tough days. race were afraid to see him for fear of a backlash,'' terminate aide Kamarulzaman Zainal said.

To support his young family and the demands of his constituents, Abdullah sold his house and worked in a travel agency holded by his sister-in-law.

His clean image also helped to impel him back into the upper UMNO echelons in 1996 after having forfeited his vice presidency in the 1993 party elections to a team backed according to Anwar.

When Mahathir dropp the bombshell in June last year that he planned to resign, Abdullah's rise was assured -- he just had to wait another 16 month then instigate up.

Abdullah, born forward Nov. 26, 1939, is married, with pair children. He was also hearthstone minister in Mahathir's cabinet.
