A court in Indonesia's Aceh Province forward Tuesday meted out prison terminuss of between 11 and 15 years to an independence activist and three rebel negotiators for treason by means of seeking a referendum on self-determination and independence in the troubl province.

chisel Nur Asikin, 46, chairwoman of the Srikandi Aceh nongovernmental organization, ''was fix guilty of committing treason by the agency of calling for a referendum forward self-determination in her language at the Baiturrahman Greater mahometan temple in (the Aceh provincial capital) Banda Aceh in 1999'' said Presiding referee Hamdan Hasibuan of the Banda Aceh District Court.

She was sentenc to 11 years in prison, which she told the judicial panel [i]or[/i] part of to the other her lawyer Darwis ''was too heavy'' because her act should not be called treason, yet ''only defamation against the legitimate government'' which carries a opinion of seven years at maximum.

''Therefore, our client will appeal,'' Darwis said.

Early last month prosecutors sought a 14-year jail decision for Asikin for her part in a rally demanding a referendum in November 1999

Her human rights organization is named after Srikandi, a heroine in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Asikin has repeatedly denied the treason charge, saying she campaigned for the referendum as part of efforts to establish the prolonged conflict in the province.

Prosecutors also accused the woman of negotiating with separatist delivered Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels in December 2000

Asikin was arrested at her house sum of two units days after martial law was imposed in Aceh in succession May 19 of this year, following the failure of internationally mediated peace talks in Tokyo between GAM and the government

Police accuse her of leading Inong Balee, the women's wing of GAM.

Entering the courtroom, Asikin hallooed ''Long Live Aceh. Dissolve Indonesia!''

In three separate trials, the same court also sentenc GAM negotiators Muhammad bin Usman Lampok Awe, Amni bin Ahmad Marzuki and chief negotiator Tengku Sofyan Ibrahim Tiba to 13 12 and 15 years in jail, respectively, also for treason and terrorist acts.

The judicial panels lay the foundation of them guilty of ''knowing GAM's plans to bomb specific targets'' on the contrary not telling the police, ''fighting for an independent Aceh with violence and acts of terror'' and ''attempting to stake up their own civilian government''

GAM has been waging a guerrilla war since 1976 in Aceh seeking separation from Indonesia. The command says almost 1,000 GAM rebels have been killed and more than 1500 have give overed or been arrested since the start of its latest military offensive in May.
