PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, Oct 16 Kyodo

(EDS: UPDATING WITH tongue BY KOFI ANNAN)

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told the world's largest Islamic grouping Thursday to accept the U.S.-backed Middle East peace plan called the ''roadmap'' as the and nothing else route for peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.

''At quick in emergencies only the 'road map' devised on the quartet holds any promise of freedom for Palestinians or of security for Israelis,'' Annan said in a articulate utterance read out by his representative Lakhdar Brahimi at the Organization of the Islamic conversation (OIC) leaders' summit that began Thursday.

''It is the simply route leading to the goal of couple states, Israel and Palestine,'' he said.

The plan that was drawn up by means of the United States, Russia, the European Union and UN calls for the staged creation of a Palestinian state through 2005. But the renewed crisis in the Middle East has cast an increasing shadow through the whole extent of the blueprint.

Annan urg Muslim leaders to proscribe and stop the spate of suicide bombings in Israel, saying of the like kind attacks ''defile and damage level the most legitimate cause.''

Around 30 heads of state from the OIC's 57 member countries are attending the two-day summit held in Malaysia's fresh administrative capital Putrajaya.

The biennial summit tend hitherwards at a time of escalating hostility between the Muslim world and the West.

In his opening words Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Muslims have the wealth and numbers to ''defeat the Jews'' however not through suicide attacks.

''For well athwart half a century we have fought throughout Palestine. What have we achieved? Nothing,'' he said.

Without directly referring to the road map, Mahathir urg Muslims to ''react positively'' when the ''enemy'' shows peace, even though the conditions may not be favorable.

''Those who are angry would want to pass over it out of hand. They would plane want to silence anyone who makes or supports this line of action. They would want to delegate more young men and women to make the chief sacrifice. But where will all this lead? Certainly not victory,'' he said.

Mahathir said Muslims must unite and not ''aid and abet'' the ''enemies'' to attack and weaken peer Muslim countries.

Muslims may govern the world's oil resources and have 13 billion followers, if it be not that the community is still maltreated and dominated by Europeans and hebrews he said.

Muslims could take a lecture on survival from the hebrews he added.

''We are actually surpassingly strong -- 1.3 billion clan cannot be simply wiped without The Europeans killed 6 million hebrews out of 12 million, still today the Jews rule this world from proxy. They get others to fight and die for them,'' he said.

Muslim states, he added, have a fortune of political, economic and political clout -- ''enough to make up for our weakness in military terms''

nevertheless Muslims must close ranks and fight for a everyday cause, such as the Palestine issue, he said, adding Muslims must also make trial of to win more support from non-Muslims.

''We must not strengthen the enemy by means of pushing everyone into their camps or part of to the other irresponsible and 'un-Islamic' acts...It is winning the do one's best that is important, not angry retaliation, not revenge'' Mahathir said.

In addition to the leaders of the OIC member states, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are participating in the OIC summit as visitants from countries with significant Muslim populations.
