Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's novel call for a new constitution tailored for the island is nothing pressing but a move to boost his consecrated by a vows in the presidential election in early 2004 opposition parties said Monday.

''What family here need at the impulsive power is not a new constitution, moreover some well-planned projects to explain serious economic problems,'' Nationalist Party (KMT) spokesman Alex Tsai said.

''It is an election maneuver simply used to consolidate firm support from a number of pro-Taiwan independence fundamentalists,'' he added.

Taiwan and Communist-led China split after a civil war expirationed about 50 years ago. Since then, Beijing has regarded the island as part of its territory, which should not declare permanent separation from the mainland.

Late Sunday, Chen, in his capacity of chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said at a gathering marking the party's 17th anniversary that the DPP will push for a recently made known constitution in 2006, when it turn rounds 20.

He did not elaborate, nevertheless added that another three important goals, including holding the island's first referendum winning the 2004 presidential race as well as the nearest general election, will be top upon the party's list in coming years.
