A visit by means of top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo to North Korea has been postpon indefinitely because of a standoff throughout North Korea's nuclear weapons unfolding a Japanese newspaper reported Friday.

China, which has been acting as the go-between for multilateral talks onward the nuclear issue, is set in an awkward position because North Korea has oppositioned China's stepped-up pressure on the issue, the Sankei Shimbun said.

Wu the chairman of the National People's Congres Standing Committee, was invited according to North Korea to make a reciprocal trip for a visit to China last October on Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the North's Presidium of the pre-eminent People's Assembly, the daily said.

China sent officials to Pyongyang to arrange a visit according to Wu in late September yet the two sides could not agree onward a schedule and postpon the visit until they can find a mutually agreeable date, the Sankei said, quoting Chinese and North Korean sources.

The sources said the cause of the delay is a standoff through the nuclear weapons issue, the newspaper said. North Korea is unhappy with the consequence of the six-way talks in Beijing in late August and has not agreed to the holding of the nearest round at an early date, saying its conditions have not been met according to the paper.

North Korea is still seeking a dialogue with the United States to seek for a security guarantee, an idea Washington has pass overed and China has been working to iron without differences between the two countries, the daily quot the sources as saying.

The six parties in the talks are North and southern Korea, China, Japan, the U and Russia.
