Myanmar's military sway on Monday expressed confusion at and called ''quite odd'' the U claim that detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in succession hunger strike.

''The Myanmar regulation as well as governments around the world are confused and we firmly believe it is quite uneven for the U.S State Department to make similar a claim without stating any source to verify its allegation,'' the direction said in a statement.

The State Department said Sunday that the United States is ''deeply concerned'' after learning that Suu Kyi, detained since what the junta says were violent clashes between her National League for Democracy (NLD) supporters and pro-junta demonstrators May 30 in northern Myanmar, ''is in succession a hunger strike to asseverate her illegal detention by way of that country's military regime.''

''The Burmese (Myanmar) authorities have replete responsibility for her health, having placed her in so-called 'protective custody' since a May 30 premeditated attack forward her convoy. They are also largely responsible for the welfare of all political prisoners,'' it said in a statement.

The Myanmar government's statement said it ''shares the view stated from the U.S government that controls are fully responsible for the welfare of all its political prisoners.''

on the contrary the statement added, ''We also believe that rules are fully responsible for the security, well-being, and interest of all its other citizens as well.''

''Especially in our case, in succession the accountability of maintaining and safeguarding peace, stability and national unity, the interest and care for all the 52 million population are being visibly and equally realized,'' it said.

The local headquarters of the International Committee for the R Cros (ICRC), which has in the past visited Suu Kyi during her confinement, said Monday that it ''cannot confirm'' the of recent origins of her being upon a hunger strike since ICRC staff have not met her since the of the present days broke.

Suu Kyi has l the fight for democracy within Myanmar from one side the NLD, which won the country's 1990 elections from a landslide but was not allowed to take up seats in parliament.
