Australian police and multitudes helping restore law and order in the Solomon Islands were thanked on Prime Minister John Howard upon Monday when the first Australian leader in a decade landed in the southern Pacific nation for a company of ships five-hour visit.

''It has gone extremely well. It's been a great example of Pacific cooperation and it's important that high flat contact between Australia and the Solomon Islands be maintained,'' he told reporters before departing from the northeastern city Townsville.

Howard said he will also fitting with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Allan Kemakeza and members of his cabinet to discuss the progres of the mission.

However, the prime minister warned the intervention is not a risk-free operation. ''There's always a bearing when it goes so surpassingly well and goes well quickly for nation to relax and think oh well, there's no danger, there's no puzzle it's all going to pass very smoothly. That frequently doesn't turn out to be the case.''

The Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) is a 2000-strong Australian-led police and military force that includes personnel from modern Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Papua fresh Guinea which was opened last month after a suit from the Solomons government

The mission inscribeed its most dangerous phase Friday with the conclusion of a 21-day fire-arm amnesty in which almost 3000 weapons, including more than 300 high-powered rifles, machine fire-arms grenade launchers and 300000 sphericals of ammunition, were handed in to RAMSI.

Meanwhile, Solomon opposition Member of Parliament Alfred Sasako called forward Howard to insist Kemakeza stand down while corruption allegations against the premier are investigated, including claims he is responsible for several deaths.

''If these serious allegations are seen by means of the people of the Solomon Islands to be annotationed over, then there is a serious threat to the suitable work that the Australian-led intervention had already achieved in names of restoring law and order,'' Sasako told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Monday.

''Unles the prime minister stands aside, there will not ever be any independent and integral investigation into all of this,'' Sasako said.

The multinational intervention force aims to finis the ethnic violence and lawlessness between the nation from Malaita and Guadalcanal islands that has almost ruined the impoverished nation of nearly 500000 through the past five years.
