The Philippine military intelligence chief resigned Wednesday from one side of to the other unrest in the military ranks that l to a mutiny of junior officers and enlisted personnel last Sunday.

The resignation of Brig. Gen Victor Corpus, chief of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), ''was accepted with down-reaching regret'' by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, her spokesman said.

The spokesman added, however, Arroyo is not accepting Corpus's retirement from service.

The mutineers last Sunday demanded that Corpus, along with Defense Secretary Angelo Reye and police Director General Hermogenes Ebdane, grade down over corruption and scandals in the military and police.

Corpus denied the accusations, particularly that he was involved in bombings, allegedly at the government, in the southern city Davao.

''But I think that it is best for all that I acquire out of the picture,'' he said in a alphabetic character dated Tuesday.
