Party leaders of the ruling coalition onward Saturday hailed the Diet passage of legislation authorizing the management to send Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to Iraq while the opposition fired a barrage of criticism, calling the direction irresponsible, and said the law contains ''deep roots'' of disaster for Japan.

Kazuo Shii, chairman of the Japanese Communist Party, accused the guidance of ''taking sides'' with the United States and Britain in their occupation of Iraq by dint of sending troops to Iraq.

''The legislation is patently illegal and dangerous,'' he said.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) said the guidance is using the reconstruction of Iraq as a show for sending troops.

''The objective in sending the SDF is to support the U military,'' the SDP said in a statement.
