Senior Israeli and Palestinian security officials met Saturday night in Herzliyya, north of Tel Aviv, aiming to bring the deteriorating situation in the region beneath control, related sources said.

The high-level meeting was realized after the United States pushed for it and was the first contact between the couple sides since the three-way summit held forward June 4 in Aqaba, Jordan, among the U Israel and the Palestinian autonomous government

At the late Saturday meeting, the officials are believed to have discussed an Israeli proposal that it will withdraw military forces from areas where the Palestinian direction is capable of stopping attacks by the agency of Palestinian extremists, the sources said.

The Palestinian regulation has also expressed its readiness to take the responsibility of suppressing the extremists in near regions and maintaining law and order, the sources said.

In Washington in succession Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said in a tongue at a banquet of an American-Arab organization that President George W Bush ''is totally committed to achieving the vision...of sum of two units states living side-by-side in peace.''
