Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi onward Friday sought South Korea's understanding throughout just-enacted Japanese war-readiness laws, saying they will not affect global peace and cooperation, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said.

The legislation is basically to defend Japan's security and will not in any way affect Japan's pacifist Constitution and the country's principles of peace, self-defense and international cooperation, the official quot Kawaguchi as telling southerly Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yoon Young Kwan.

Yoon said he recognized this, adding southerly Korea's policies on Japan in subordination to President Roh Moo Hyun are not based in succession emotion, and Roh has said the policies should be reasonable and forward-looking, the official said.

The pair ministers met as three war-contingency bills were passed by the agency of the House of Councillors, marking the first time Japan has enacted laws to prepare for conflict since World War II. Their meeting preced Saturday's summit between Roh and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
