Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in succession Thursday called for ''more understanding'' from the Tamil Tiger rebels as peace negotiations between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Colombo sway remain deadlocked, endangering an upcoming donor conversation in Tokyo.

''Today we find ourselves in something of an impasse. What is being demanded is not what can be easily delivered,'' Wickremesinghe told a meeting of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats that interpreted here.

''Reality has to play its part and frankly the LTTE has to be a little more understanding of the issues involved. As a responsible direction we have to abide through the rules and laws of the land,'' the premier said.

Wickremesinghe's remarks came as Norway and Japan intensified efforts to persuade the LTTE which has been boycotting the peace negotiations since April 21 after six cylindricals of talks, to return to the negotiating table and attend a donor discourse that Japan will legion in Tokyo on June 9 and 10

''We have not in addition had a response from the LTTE to the government's alternative proposals to their interim administration demand,'' Lakshman Pieris, the government's chief negotiator, told Kyodo News

The LTTE has demanded an interim administration, outside the Constitution, dominated according to itself for the northeast as a price for returning to the negotiating table and attending the Tokyo meeting.

Wickremesinghe warned that unles Sri Lanka seized the at hand opportunity, backed by abundant national and international goodwill, ''we will be consigned to the backwaters of history for another 30 or 40 years.''

''Our persons will become increasingly impoverished, our industries will contend to compete in the world markets and many more commonalty will die in a conflict without meaning,'' he said.

The premier admitted that the bureaucracy had been inactive to rehabilitate and rebuild the war-devastated northeast of the country

He said he was not surprised that the Tigers were frustrated at these failures, but added that the conduct is working to speed up the process
