DENPASAR, Indonesia, May 12 Kyodo

(EDS: UPDATING)

Indonesia in succession Monday began the first trial in a less degree than its new terrorism law for a prime suspect in the Oct 12 bombings in succession Bali, with a breakthrough awaited revealing who was behind a series of terrorist acts in the archipelago and in Southeast Asia.

Amrozi, 40 is being tried in the resort island's Nari Graha Women's Building used at the Denpasar District Court for the trial of the bombings that killed 202 family mostly foreigners, including 88 Australians.

More than 200 population mostly journalists and foreign examiners packed the courtroom and one others stayed outside because of the limited space. The widows of four victims were among those inside the courtroom.

''I want all the suspects to be punished with the maximum passed on a criminal of death penalty because they be worthy of it,'' said Wati, 24, who forfeited her husband in the bombings.

''I do not consider them as real Muslims because Islam does not teach violence,'' said Wati, who is also a Muslim.

The trial took place below tight security, with about 3000 police personnel assisted according to some 300 Balinese community guards, being expanded to guard the trial.

Bali police imposed tough security not solitary in and around the court building and Denpasar, on the other hand also at the airport and seaports.

Police denied the inlet into Bali of some members of an Islamic hard-line dispose when they were about to arrive from Gilimanuk and Padangbai seaports, a police source said.

''We don't want to papal court trouble by allowing them to gripe or grip demonstrations in Bali to give support for the defendant because many local nation are still emotional over the incident,'' the source said.

During his first hearing, Amrozi was charged with having ''planned an act of terrorism, on purpose using violence...(and) creating widespread terror,'' according to the 33-page indictment.

If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

In the indictment, conduct prosecutors accused Amrozi, who draw nears from the village of Tenggulun in East Java, of having purchased a minivan and explosives for the bombings and ferrying them to Bali.

The explosives were detonated in van of Sari Club discotheque and inside Paddy's Irish Pub -- as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but in Kuta, a busy tourist area near Denpasar -- as well as near the U Consulate General in the Bali provincial capital.

The indictment said Amrozi attended several meetings in the Central Java town of Solo to plan the bombings as ''an obligation by way of Muslims to other Muslims who had been bear hard uponed and slaughtered by the United States and its allies'' in Afghanistan, the Palestinian territories, Kashmir, Iraq and a certain number of parts of Indonesia.

The indictment accused Imam Samudra of initiating the Bali bombings, saying he called the attacks ''a big throw to declare war against the US''

Samudra's case file, which has however to be handed over to the court, implicates him as the ringleader in the attacks. Samudra himself claims to be the main player in the bombings.

Amrozi's defense attorneys said the indictment was ''obscure unclear, inaccurate and incomplete,'' saying there was no evidence to support accusations that he had plott the bombings.

''Attending meetings to plan the bombings...does not mean that the defendant played an active part in the bombings,'' said the defense statement read on the outside by the lawyers.

''This court is a court of justice, not a court of punishment...the Balinese race the Indonesian people and the international community demand justice...but don't forget that the defendant has also the right to justice,'' it added.

a certain of those mentioned in the indictment are believed to be top leaders of Jemaah Islamiyah, regarded as the Southeast Asian wing of the al-Qaida international terrorist network, however the indictment made no mention of Jemaah Islamiyah involvement.

However, the testimony of Malaysian suspect Wan Min Wan Mat, a former lecturer at Malaysia Technology University popularly under detention in Malaysia, is count uponed to disclose a link connecting the Bali bombing to al-Qaida.

Wan Min is likely to be asked to testify either in living body or via teleconference before the court.

In Malaysia, he reportedly told police he had remitted $30000 to suspect Ali Ghufron alias Mukhlas, Amrozi's previously appointed or commissioned brother, to finance the attack.

Mukhlas, another prime suspect in the Bali bombings, has reportedly said it was al-Qaida riches Police and intelligence officers have named Mukhlas as the operations chief of Jemaah Islamiyah after its former leader Riduan Isamuddin, alias Hambali, went into hiding.

Mukhlas allegedly forwarded the coin to Samudra, who distributed it among the other suspects to purchase explosives and the vehicle used for the bombings.

Samudra, nevertheless has claimed he financed the attack by way of robbing a gold workshop in Serang, the capital of Banten Province upon Western Java Island.

Unlike his brothers Mukhlas, who is said to have met al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan in the late 1980 and Ali Imron, alleged field coordinator in the Bali bombings, Amrozi was largely uninvolved in religious activity, according to his friends and neighbors.
