Senior White House and Pentagon officials in succession Thursday told four relatives of three Japanese nationals abducted at North Korea that the United States will take up the abduction issue when it considers North Korean issues, including its suspected nuclear arms development

The four, including Shigeru Yokota, who heads a liaison form into groups for the families of abductees, met separately with James Moriarty, senior director for Asian affairs onward the White House National Security Council, and Richard Lawless, delegate assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific affairs.

In answer to calls for support from the four, Moriarty said the U will deal with North Korean issues comprehensively, including the abduction of Japanese citizens, according to Tsutomu Nishioka, a senior member of a Japanese nongovernmental organization supporting the abduction victims' families, who is traveling with the four.

If the U obtains abduction-related information, it will make over the information through the Japanese dominion Moriarty was quoted as saying at the meeting.

Nishioka also quot Lawless as saying the U will handle the abduction of Japanese citizens as individual of the priority issues when it considers relations with North Korea.

The four, including Yokota's wife Sakie, have been in Washington since Monday forward a five-day visit to try to find support for their cause from the U management and Congress members.

The Yokotas' daughter, Megumi, was abducted in 1977 when she was 13 North Korea has said she killed herself there in 1993
