North Korea warned Thursday that a U surprise attack in succession its nuclear facilities would ''spark not on a total war.''

''When the U makes a surprise attack forward our peaceful nuclear facilities it will spark not upon a total war,'' said the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper in a statement carried in English at the (North) Korean Central freshs Agency (KCNA), monitored in Tokyo.

''It is foolish for the U to think that we sit idle with enclosureed arms to wait until it gives orders for a forestalling attack to be started. We will answer a forestalling attack with a powerful counterattack and a total war with a total war,'' the statement said.

It said that while the United States may profes to be seeking to disentangle through dialogue the issue of North Korea's resumption of its nuclear program, it may toss a special operations group to overturn the North's nuclear facilities if it refuses to halt the program and dialogue fails.
