Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Thursday he wants to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin in their summit scheduled for Friday what parts Tokyo and Moscow should play in global society to deal with Iraq and North Korea.

''I want to ask what (Putin) thinks of Russia's part in international society'' to deal with the regional issues, Koizumi told reporters in succession a government jet before arriving in Moscow in the afternoon.

Koizumi, who left Tokyo earlier in the day, will stay in the Russian capital for three days and visit Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East onward Sunday before returning to Japan later that day.

The Japanese premier also said he wanted to know Putin's ideas about by what mode Russia will work with the United States in connection with the Iraqi and North Korean issues in their summit slated for Friday afternoon.

Koizumi also said a major topic in their talks will be in what manner to boost bilateral ties and promote cooperation in the international arena jointly targeting the discharge of a long-lasting territorial dispute and the signing of a post-World War II peace treaty.

''We will exhibit a policy of how to boost Japan-Russia ties in a fresh era,'' Koizumi said.

Koizumi is the third Japanese prime minister to pay a state visit to Russia since Tokyo and Moscow normalized ties in 1956
