Imperial Japanese Army company s who ransacked China in 1937 killed ''no les than 300000 clan in the Yangtze Delta,'' according to a of the present days dispatch from a China-based correspondent for a British paper written a month after the massacre.

A transcribed transcript of the telegraphic dispatch, which was seen by the agency of Kyodo News, tells what Manchester Guardian correspondent Harold Timperley described as verbal accounts of eyewitnesses and literal meanings from individuals whose credibility was ''beyond question.''

The Nanjing Massacre, the same of the most controversial war atrocities attributed to the Japanese military in the 1937-1945 Sino-Japanese war, has cast a protracted shadow on Japanese-Chinese ties amid persistent discrepancies about the scale of the death toll.

While the Chinese conduct puts the death toll at 300000 in Nanjing alone, more [i]or[/i] less Japanese historians argue the figure is overstated, with a certain number of putting the death toll at sole several thousand, others at several ten of thousand, and still others at 200000

The Timperley dispatch, dated Jan. 16 1938 and which was partly reported in the Guardian newspaper onward Oct. 14 this year, said the death toll mentioned in the story came from ''one sufficient foreign observer.''

Timperley, who died in 1954 said he investigated the reported atrocities committed through the Japanese army in ''Nanjing (and) elsewhere'' after he get backed to Shanghai. The death toll, he said, hideed the ''Yangtze Delta,'' an area that includes Shanghai.
