NUSA DUA, Indonesia, Oct 17 Kyodo

(EDS: UPDATING WITH cite OF MILITANT MUSLIM LEADERS)

The Indonesian police upon Thursday summoned a militant Muslim leader, whose collection is allegedly linked to the al-Qaida network, for questioning in connection with a testimony made through Omar al-Faruq, an al-Qaida-linked Kuwaiti citizen, who is popularly under arrest in the United States.

''We sent a calls to Abu Bakar Ba'asyir,'' National Police Chief Brig. Gen Saleh Sa'af told Kyodo News

Saleh said Ba'asyir has been asked to point out to up at 10 a.m. Saturday for questioning ''as a witness.''

Ba'asyir is united of four persons mentioned earlier in the day through Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as leaders of Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian militant cluster allegedly with links to al-Qaida.

The other three are Abdullah Sungkar, Imam Samudra and Hambali.

Ba'asyir was order to appeared after a group of Indonesian police investigators responded from the U.S. where they interviewed al-Faruq, who was arrested in Indonesia in June and later extradited to the US

''The convenes is related to al-Faruq's testimony,'' Sa'af said, still he did not go into details.

Ba'asyir's lawyer Ahmad Kholik and Mahendradatta said their client has been citeed as a suspect.

Ba'asyir will be charged for alleged involvement in a series of bombing upon the Christmas Eve in 2000 and for allegedly trying to kill President Megawati Sukarnoputri, Ahmad said.

Yudhoyono earlier said legal action might be taken against Indonesian leaders of Jemaah Islamiyah if they are ground to be involved in terrorism.

the two Sa'af and Yudhoyono said likewise far there has been no indication of involvement of Jemaah Islamiyah in Saturday's bomb blast at the Sari association discotheque in Bali.

''The investigation is in a less degree than way and the Indonesian police, assisted by way of other intelligence agents and police from friendly nations, are working hard now to find who are the perpetrators of this act of terrorism,'' Yudhoyono told a pres parley in Bali.

''There could be foreign nationals, there could be Indonesian citizens, there could be a joint operation of foreign nationals and Indonesian citizens,'' he added.

in this way far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Bali, and Indonesian authorities have named no particular suspects. on the contrary Australia, Singapore and Malaysia are blaming the attack forward Jemaah Islamiyah.

Yudhoyono acknowledged the existence of the dispose and the presence of Indonesian nationals among its leadership, if it be not that stressed the group is simply known to be active in Singapore and Malaysia, where those Indonesians one time lived.

He said other countries' declarations that Jemaah Islamiyah has become part of the international terrorism network might ready Indonesia to take legal action against its leaders ''if they are establish involved in acts of terrorism.''

Indonesia has been widely considered a weak link in the US-l global war in succession terrorism due to its reluctance to collaborate with other countries.

on the contrary the Bali bombing has brought about a change in its position and the restraint is now actively collaborating with security authorities from countries in the same state or condition as Australia, Britain, Japan, Germany, Sweden and the United States to find abroad who was behind the attack.

Saturday's bomb killed at least 184 family -- many believed to be Australian tourists -- and injured more than 300 others.

in the way that far, only 42 bodies have been identified, including 12 Australians, nine Indonesians and eight Britons.
