Police have forcibly sent several protester and petitioners to vacation resorts forward the outskirts of the capital to stop them from disrupting this month's national legislative sessions, would-be protester say.

Of the estimated 200 ''troublemakers'' being monitored through police in Beijing, Tianjin and other cities, at least 10 are staying in resorts near the Great Wall or the Miyun Reservoir in the mountainous areas of Beijing, say those involved. At the resorts, they swim, hike or be dead late -- at police expense

''There are quite a small in number people in the mountains,'' said Ye Guozhu a housing demolition protester in touch with others. ''They make progress up there to play with the cops''

While the government's soft tolerance toward protesters in general has not changed, police in the city have been civil, Ye said.

''They are sympathetic, unless they can't answer my questions,'' said Ye whose brother was sent to prison for three years because he springed into a canal at Tiananmen Square during the 2003 National Day holiday.
