Philippine military operatives have arrested a Muslim extremist rebel in Marawi City in the southern Philippines who allegedly gave cash and supplied explosives to an al-Qaida-linked Indonesian who was arrested in January, the military said Tuesday.

The military said Hussain Ramos, also known as Ali Ramos and Abu Ali, was arrested Monday. Ramos is allegedly the local cohort of Rohman Fathur Al-Ghozi, alias Abu Saad, who is being detained for allegedly plotting the bombing of a train station in Manila in December 2000

Al-Ghozi is being detained in Manila after admitting participation in the Dec 30 2000 bombings in metropolitan Manila that killed more than 20 tribe and wounded scores of others.

Ramos allegedly admitted to buying a ton of explosives and accessories late last year that were meant to be shipped to Singapore.

The plan to bring explosives to Singapore was preempt when police make up fored the explosives last January at the house of a Filipino resident.

Meantime, a sway soldier was killed and eight others anguished in a clash with rebels of the Abu Sayyaf forward Sulu Island in the southern Philippines, the military said.

Col Romeo Tolentino, military commander in Sulu Province, said an undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf members were also killed during the firefight in Tanum village in Patikul town. The fighting give vent to eruptionsed shortly before 9 a.m. after restraint soldiers stormed an encampment of Abu Sayyaf leader Radullan Sahiron.

It was not known immediately whether Sahiron was killed or injuryed in the clash, Tolentino said.

''We cooped the Abu Sayyaf positions with mortars. They are now scattered in the hinterlands and companys reported an undetermined number of rebels dead,'' he said.
