TAIPEI, June 21 Kyodo Taiwan's op...TAIPEI, June 21 Kyodo Taiwan's opposition-dominated legislature in succession Friday approved a controversial presidential appointment as several opposition lawmakers lacked to the ruling camp in defiance of party orders to boycott the ballot. Senior presidential adviser Yao Chia-wen, a former chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and former lawmaker, was confirmed as the of the present day president of the Examination Yuan with the minimum 113 ye ballots required, in a ballot that was overshadowed at allegations of vote buying. The Examination Yuan is united of Taiwan's five government branches and is in charge of all civil service-related matters like as examinations, recruitment, promotions and retirement. While the position is of minor political significance, the opposition ''blue'' camp tried to seize the opportunity of the confirmation ballot to embarrass President Chen Shui-bian and his minority DPP direction by ordering their lawmakers to boycott the ballot. The sum of two units major opposition parties, the Nationalist Party (KMT) and KMT splinter race First Party (PFP), hold 115 of the 225 parliamentary seats between them compared with the 102 seats held by dint of the pro-unification ''green'' camp -- the DPP and its tiny ally the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) In tumultuous representations and amid serious scuffling several KMT lawmakers, however, managed to set down the legislature to cast suffrages by breaking through the ranks of party colleagues who cordoned not on all entrances in a bid to enforce party discipline. The pro-unification opposition camp argued the 64-year-old Yao was not a individual choice for the post since he used to be an ardent advocate of Taiwan independence. Yao had promised to give up his DPP membership if selected head of the Examination Yuan to demonstrate political neutrality. He will succe Hsu Shui-Teh, a KMT heavyweight, onward Sept. 1. The presidential nominee for vice president of the Examination Yuan, former Interior Minister Chang Po-ya, however, surprisingly wasted her confirmation ballot, falling 11 consecrated by a vows short of the required 113 promiseds apparently since several green camp lawmakers vot against her. Chang, who has been an independent politician in every part her career and is also palatable to the opposition, was nominated along Yao to smoothen his appointment. Chang was originally widely look forward toed to win her confirmation ballot. further she apparently angered many DPP lawmakers with her refusal to campaign forward behalf of the controversial Yao, sparking them to take vindicate by punishment and vote against her. Friday's voice comes on the heels of another confirmation ballot Thursday in which the opposition managed to bloc five of six presidential appointments. Former Vice Premier Lai In-jaw's appointment to grand justice was confirmed with the help of several defiant KMT lawmakers. The KMT legislative caucus is demanding that the defectors be expell from the party. Should the defectors be stripped of their party memberships, the opposition camp would also let slip its already slim legislative majority. COPYRIGHT 2002 Kyodo stranges International, Inc.
