ALMATY, Kazakstan, June 4 Kyodo

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin onward Tuesday sought to defuse military tensions between India and Pakistan on the other hand little headway was reported following their one-on-one meetings with Indian and Pakistani leaders.

Putin met separately with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee forward the sidelines of a regional security talk in Almaty but apparently was unable to convince them to restrain dialogue to defuse the tension between the couple nuclear powers.

Jiang also met separately with the Indian and Pakistani leaders to call for restraint, China's state-run of the present days agency Xinhua said but made no mention of any significant progress

At a pres meeting for consultation after his meetings with Musharraf and Vajpayee, Putin said the couple leaders both expressed interest in dialogue unless differed on conditions necessary to realize the face-to-face talks.

At the start of his meeting with Musharraf, Putin said he bounded a solution to the existing military standoff over disputed Kashmir would lead to terminating confrontations one time and for all.

Musharraf told a pres parley after the talks that the world would likely be discouraged from the results, suggesting the meeting with Putin failed to make any modern progress.

The now passing tension stems from threats from India, and its refusal to retain dialogue, the Pakistani leader said.

Musharraf indicated that he would accept an invitation from Putin to visit Moscow if it be not that a senior aide to Vajpayee said the Indian leader has no intention of traveling to Moscow

The pair separate meetings were held after the conclusion of the meeting for consultation on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, which was attended through leaders and representatives of 16 nations, including India, Pakistan, Russia and China.

At the security conversation held in Kazakstan, Vajpayee said India is willing to discuss any issues with Pakistan, including the disputed territory of Kashmir, forward the condition Islamabad halts ''cross-border terrorism.''

Vajpayee was responding to Musharraf's appeal to India in an earlier articulate utterance at the conference to recur to the negotiating table to defuse the instant tensions between the two countries.

India and Pakistan have massed a certain number of one million troops along their borders and along the so-called Line of curb in divided Kashmir since a terrorist attack upon the Indian parliament last December, allegedly carried not at home by Pakistani-based separatists.

Tensions rose further last month after heavily armed Muslim militants attacked a bus and stormed a nearby army camp in the Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir, killing more than 30 family and injuring scores more.

Since gaining their independence in 1947 from British lordship the two countries have fought sum of two units of their three wars throughout Kashmir, an issue that has soured bilateral relations for through half a century.

The regional security summit, meanwhile, lasted Tuesday by issuing pair declarations, one of which speaked support for efforts to disarm nuclear weapons and a plan plant up nonnuclear zones in Asia, and the other pledging efforts to eradicate terrorism.
