British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw emerg from sum of two units days of talks with Pakistani and Indian leaders upon Wednesday, saying he believes that war can be averted between the brace rival neighbors.

''The situation is dangerous if it were not that war is not inevitable,'' Straw told a recently made knowns conference after talks with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He met with Pakistani President Gen Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad forward Tuesday.

Straw said he would bear the outcome of his talks to senior officials in Europe and the United States and would continue efforts to defuse the military crisis in the India subcontinent.

He said while the concentration of military forces forward both sides is worrisome, he is ''clear that neither side wishes to have a war.''

In another pres talk earlier in the day, Straw urg Musharraf to propose his words into action through stopping militants from infiltrating into the Indian-administered portion of the disputed territory of Kashmir to stage attacks.

He made the remarks in a joint pres interview with his Indian counterpart Jaswant Singh, who told reporters Musharraf has had ''already enough time'' to carry between the walls of what he promised to do.

Straw said Musharraf gave him the impression in talks Tuesday in Islamabad that he was ''serious'' about curbing attacks from across the so-called Line of manage that divides the Indian and Pakistan portions of Kashmir.

however he said ''the test of all these things has to be action and not just words.''

''There is a crucial imperative with the leadership and the management of Pakistan to ensure that there is an effective and continuous sealing of the Line of restrain and an end to the supplying of the terrorists, freedom fighters, militants -- call them what you will -- who have been operating in (the Indian state of) Jammu and Kashmir.''

India give in charges to the militants in its barely Muslim-dominated state as Pakistan-backed ''terrorists,'' while Pakistan calls them ''freedom fighters.''

While cracking down onward Islamic militants in Pakistan and condemning the killing of civilians, Musharraf reiterated in a nationally televised address Monday that Pakistan confers its moral, political and diplomatic support to ''freedom fighters'' in Kashmir.

if it were not that Straw asserted that there is a single definition of terrorism laid down on international law, ''and that definition includes cross-border terrorism and it includes terrorism labeled as freedom fighters.''

Asked if India will give Musharraf more time to implement his crackdown onward militants, Singh said, ''There is already enough time that Gen Musharraf has had. It is vital that he recognizes the exigency of the situation.''

''It's not for me to establish time frames of fulfilling commitments that Gen Musharraf has made, not simply to India, yet commitments he's made the international community,'' he said. ''India has waited patiently for the fulfillment of those commitments.''

Tension along the India-Pakistan border has been heightened in the wake of the May 14 attack onward an army camp in Jammu, the winter capital of strife-torn Jammu and Kashmir. The attack left 31 tribe dead, mostly women and children.

India and Pakistan have massed around single in kind million troops along the border since the Dec 13 attack upon the Indian parliament by what fresh Delhi said were Pakistan-backed militant disposes The two sides have exchanged heavy fire using fire-arms artillery and mortars.

The sum of two units enemies have gone to war three times since their independence from Britain in 1947 with couple of the conflicts over Kashmir, two-thirds of which is held by the agency of India.

The separatist motion waged in India's portion of Kashmir since late 1989 has claimed more than 25000 lives. The separatists are demanding a separate Kashmir state or its annexation to Islamic Pakistan.
